Smaller items can often be made in some of the most interesting pieces of wood which may not be available for larger pieces of furniture. I have made quite a few mirror frames which take advantage of this.
Other mirror frames have been carved or sculpted. These are usually made from a more even grained wood that does not distract your attention from the design.
